BYU Rugby: A Bright Future... of Blue and White

As I was leaving the Wilkinson Center today, I happened to glance up at the TV monitor to see some highlights of the BYU Rugby team playing in an ad for the 2009 highlight video... I couldn't help but think of the great things that happened over the course of last year's season... and of the great advances that have occurred for the benefit of the team within the last few months...

Just yesterday, for example, I had the opportunity to speak with newly announced Cougar Rugby Foundation President Aaron Webber (interview forthcoming), and I can assure all alumni and fans in the ranks that the future of BYU Rugby looks bright indeed. This man, a BYU Rugby alum himself, well recognizes the obstacles preventing the team from developing into a full-fledged, self-sustaining program. I am confident, that with Aaron Webber at the helm of the CRF, we can look forward to the BYU Rugby team making great strides to become the program we all envision.

In the same breath, I wish to applaud the BYU Rugby coaching staff for their various efforts to build the rugby team into an established program, especially in the last year. As if winning a National Championship wasn't progress enough, the BYU Rugby team now enjoys a new and improved website with several great features never available in the past... and only more to come in the future.

Add to all of these advances the amazing schedule prepared for the team this season: a game this weekend against an emerging collegiate rugby presence, the University of Delaware; a Homecoming match against our rival Utah for the Wasatch Cup to be broadcast nationwide on BYU-TV; and a later match against the same University of Utah to be held in the 20,000-seat capacity, Rio Tinto Stadium... not to mention the usual playoff and National Tournament games at season's end...

And so, my beloved BYU Rugby Fans near and far, I share with you a bright image of the future... a deep sea of blue and white, spanning the nation over: BYU Rugby fans coming out of the woodwork lining up to embrace the nation's greatest team. It can happen... It will happen... It is happening already, right before our very eyes...

We are truly blessed... all of us: BYU Rugby players, coaches, staff, alumni, fans, friends, and family alike. Though outsiders may scoff as they please, no one close to the team can deny that the camaraderie experienced, the personal developments realized, and the relationships forged all serve to make BYU Rugby more than just a team... more than just a sport... it's a family that forms part of who we are and what we do...

As a member of that wonderful family, I take pride and joy in doing what I can to make it better... and I invite each and every one of you to do the same. After all, you never know what amazing things might happen as a result of your efforts!

Now, as concerning me and mine, well, you already know that we're keeping it 'in the family' from here on out... BYU Rugby Forever, my friends... onward and upward we go!

BYU Rugby Notches Early Season Victory

(from BYU Rugby update)

Provo, UT—The BYU Cougars started their 2010 season off well with a win against the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara today by the score of 50-5.

Being early in the season head coach David Smyth and his staff seemingly worked on their combinations and depth by running on over 36 players in the win.

The scoring started early with recently-returned missionary and former U19 Eagle Ryan Roundy diving over in the 3rd minute after a UCSB turnover.

After some kicking exchanges and mounted pressure from BYU’s forwards the Cougars’ Sophomore flanker Isikeli Volavola followed up with his own try in the 12th minute.

One conversion out of two for the tries left the scoreline at 12-0.

After the two try start to the opening 15 minutes of the season Smyth said he was glad to see his team finally hit the field and play hard.

“The boys did well,” he said, “We came out and worked hard and were able to get some pressure against a good UCSB team which led to some points. Obviously there were some mistakes and things we can work on, but overall the effort was good.”

Leading try-scorer of the day junior scrumhalf Shaun Davies made his own opportunity in the 20th minute from a UCSB penalty. From the penalty Davies would tap and run dancing his way 30 meters for the try.

Davies would follow up his effort with two more support-running tries before he subbed off in the second half.

Davies’ flyhalf counterpart and captain Dylan Lubbe would also tally a bevy of tries in the first half in the 28th and 38th minutes respectively.

Another recently-returned missionary and former Canadian U19 sophomore lock TJ Allred would score from a BYU quick tap penalty in the second half to round out the Cougars’ scoring.

Captain Lubbe felt his team’s effort was a good starting point for their 2010 season.

“We’re excited to be back on the field,” he said, “The guys worked hard. We have some things to work on, but this was fun. I’m looking forward to a good season.”

The Cougars will take the next week off in terms of rugby, but will be spending time at Camp Williams in Utah for a two-day team training camp. There the Cougars will spend time with military special forces personnel in a team-building environment.

Following the Camp Williams experience BYU will re-visit Las Vegas for it’s second of three trips to the city of lights to take on the Las Vegas Blackjacks men’s club. The Blackjacks topped the Division I table last year and are looking to ramp up for their 2010 season by hosting the Cougars.

Kick off for the Blackjacks is slated for 1pm on January 13th at Sunset Park in Las Vegas.

BYU Rugby Releases 2010 Schedule

(from BYU Rugby update)

Provo, UT— The BYU Rugby program announced it’s 2010 season today highlighted by two live nationally televised games by BYU-TV.

Coming off the program’s most successful season in its history the Cougars’ 2010 schedule is full of teams that will challenge the Cougars on a weekly basis.

BYU starts with an opening match against UC Santa Barbara in Las Vegas, NV on January 9th. The Gauchos are coming off a down season for them, with a 2-6 2009 conference record, but are looking to rebound in 2010 being led by All American Prop Ross Silverman.

The Cougars return to Las Vegas again on January 23rd for a match against the men’s club the Las Vegas Blackjacks. The Blackjacks finished the 2009 season as the Division I runners-up losing the final to the Gentlemen of Aspen 25-10.

With star center Seta Tuilevuka, brother of BYU Alum Alipate Tuilevuka, sparking the backline, the Blackjacks will prove a formidable challenge for the Cougars.

The annual Red Rocks Tournament in St. George, UT next pits BYU against the nationally ranked University of Delaware January 29th. The Blue Hens won the highly competitive Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Division with big wins against Penn State, Kutztown and Navy and were ranked #1 in the country by Rugby Magazine at the close of the Fall 2009 season.

BYU will host its first home match by bringing the Aggies of Utah State to Provo on February 6th. The Cougars hosted the Aggies last year in the first live nationally televised collegiate rugby match on BYU-TV coming out victorious.

The Cougars will visit Las Vegas for a third time as they participate in the Las Vegas Invitational, which is a showcase tournament pitting top collegiate teams against each other.

At the Las Vegas Invitational BYU will take on Texas A&M on February 12th. The Cougars played the Aggies of Texas A&M in 2009 and won 36-15. BYU will play a second day game against Western Washington University.

The Cougars take a much-deserved bye week on February 20th before they measure themselves against last year’s Rugby Super League semi-finalist the Denver Barbarians on February 27th in Grand Junction, CO.

The Cougars and Barbarians met last year with the former winning 32-20 in hotly contested match. The Barbarians followed up their performance with a strong RSL season only to lose their semifinal match in injury-time to eventual RSL champ San Francisco Golden Gate 16-12.

Following the Cougars’ showdown in Grand Junction the much anticipated 2010 Wasatch Cup match with the University of Utah kick-offs on South Field on March 6th at 1pm. The Cougars routed their rival 59-15 in Salt Lake City last year to claim the Wasatch Cup for the fourth straight year.

The 2010 Wasatch Cup match against Utah will also serve as BYU’s homecoming game for all Cougar alumni with activities and details to follow. BYU-TV will also broadcast this match live into its 48 million home national audience.

2008 semi-finalist the University of Colorado comes to South Field the next week on March 13th after rebuilding their team in 2009.

The Buffaloes finished their fall 2009 campaign with an 8-3 season and with All American Tommy Pasque at No. 8 they are looking spoil the Cougars’ perfect record at South Field. Kickoff against the Buffaloes is set for a 1pm kick off.

In back-to-back weeks the Cougars will have the Colorado match broadcast live via BYU-TV. Check your local cable and satellite provider for listing details.

The Cougars have left March 20th open for a fixture to be named later.

Another marquee match up on the schedule will see the Cougars square off in a “friendly” against their rival Utah on March 24th. The second match against the Utes will be held at the Real Salt Lake’s Rio Tinto Stadium and kick off is set for 7pm. Ticket details to follow.

A familiar foe in last year’s semifinal opposition San Diego State Aztecs will close out the regular season and home schedule for the Cougars on March 27th. The Cougars’ came from behind to beat the Aztecs 31-13 last year on their way to the program’s first national championship.

Kickoff for the match against the Aztecs is slated for 1pm and will serve as Senior Day for all graduating players.

Depending upon the outcome of the 2010 Wasatch Cup showdown with Utah earlier in March the Cougars will either get a bye past the Pacific Coast Regional Playoffs or be required to participate during the April 2nd-3rd playoff matches.

The top 16 teams of the regional playoffs nationwide will meet April 16-17th for the four pool opening rounds of the USA Rugby playoffs at either UC Santa Barbara or Life University.

Should BYU make it past the above rounds of playoffs the Cougars will look to defend their championship as one of the semifinalists on April 30th. The winners of the semifinals will then meet for the National Championship respectively to be held May 1st. All semifinal and championship matches are set for Stanford’s Steuber Rugby Stadium in Palo Alto, CA.

BYU Rugby Memories: Drew and Teresa Allred

Our son TJ Allred joined the BYU Rugby Team in January 2007. He completed his mission in June of 2009 and is now with the team again. Our favorite moment in BYU Rugby history is simple. We were able to attend the round of 16 in Oakland in April 2007 and watch him play. It was an absolute thrill to see him dressed in Cougar blue, as my wife and I are BYU alumni.

Just prior to kickoff before the Wyoming game, I was nestled behind the trees (taking pictures) where the cougars were preparing to enter the field. Then to my surprise, I heard the young men sing the primary song "Nephi's Courage" and the words "We have been born of goodly parents"....touched me beyond description.

As I reflect upon this moment, tears come to eyes. That was exactly what our dear son needed. We were so impressed by the quality of young men. They treated him so well. I must say that it was Craig Clark who really took our son under his wing. We will ever be grateful to him and to the others.

BYU Rugby Memories: Jenilyn Su'a

Memory # 1: Being a BYU Rugby fan is NOT something to take lightly. The players become your family (no literal sense intended, haha). When THEY win...YOU win....winning is an amazing feeling. Scoring a try is an even more amazing feeling...winning AND scoring a try FOR the win will not only blow your mind (because of the awesomeness that lies therein) but it is also something that never really leaves your memory.

As it happened, ESPNU was covering this particular game; talk about pressure. It was a cool evening, perfect weather for a good, intense rugby game. The bleachers were jammed with people...people were overflowing onto the sidewalks and walk ways....tensions were high. The game went well...BYU was synchronic, completely in tune with one another.

With about 9.5 seconds left in the game, the backs gained possession of the ball. 20 meters out, the backs attacked!... The ball is passed to fullback Sam Thorley; Thorley passes to winger Manti Su'a; Manti Su'a SCORES!!!!!!! What a "try-umphant" feeling! The crowd goes wild. What a hum digga of a game! This boychi scores, wins the game, and puts BYU on the ESPNU map (along with his fellow teammates)...wowzers.....can I get an autograph?

Memory #2: Mikey Su'a is TWICE the size now than when he played his rookie year. In this memory, I rejoice not only in his cat-like reflexes but also in his brute strength. In this particular season, Mikey had developed cauliflower ear and had just undergone (conscious) surgery. This game was against Utah State (I think)....I have attached pictures to portray what a stalwart player this kiddo really is...... (please refer/look at pix...in order)

That moment was SO amazing to witness. He takes TWO really hard hits to his upper body...one around the neck (one day after his surgery), and still he manages to score. To see someone you know who worked so hard to get so far...to see that happen for them is such a fulfilling feeling that you can't help but be proud, humbled, excited, ecstatic, joyful, relieved, I-told-you-so, jump-up-and-down-so-hard-you-get-a-headache, blessed, and delighted all in the same emotion.
